Explanation of Matthew 1:21
Matthew 1:21 explains the purpose of Jesus’ birth in very clear words. The angel told Joseph that Mary would give birth to a son. This shows that the coming child would be fully human, born like any other child, yet sent by God.
The angel then instructed Joseph, “You shall call his name Jesus.” In Jewish culture, naming a child showed authority and acceptance. By naming the child, Joseph accepted Jesus as his own son and gave Him a legal place in David’s family line.
The name Jesus has a special meaning. It means “The Lord saves” or “God is salvation.” This name was not chosen by people but given by God Himself, showing that Jesus came with a divine mission.
The angel clearly explained that mission: “He will save his people from their sins.” Jesus did not come first to save people from political enemies, poverty, or sickness, but from sin, which separates humans from God. Sin is the root problem of mankind, and only Jesus can remove it.
This verse also shows God’s love and grace. Jesus came to save “his people,” meaning those who believe in Him and accept Him. Salvation is not earned by good works but received through faith in Jesus.
