Explanation of Matthew 1:19
Matthew 1:19 reveals the character of Joseph and teaches us what true righteousness looks like. When Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant, he did not yet know that the child was conceived by the Holy Spirit. From a human point of view, this situation brought shock, pain, and confusion into his life.
The Bible describes Joseph as a just (righteous) man. This means he respected God’s law and desired to do what was right. According to Jewish law, Joseph had the right to expose Mary publicly, which could have led to severe punishment and shame for her. However, Joseph chose mercy over strict judgment.
The verse says Joseph was “unwilling to put her to shame.” This shows his compassionate heart. Even when he felt hurt, he did not want Mary to suffer publicly. His righteousness was not harsh; it was filled with grace and kindness. Joseph planned to divorce her quietly, protecting her dignity while still acting according to the law.
Joseph’s decision also shows patience and self-control. He did not act in anger or make a public accusation. Instead, he chose a calm and gentle response. This teaches us that true righteousness is not only about obeying rules, but about loving people, even in difficult situations.
