Explanation of Matthew 1:18
Matthew 1:18 explains how the birth of Jesus Christ happened and shows that it was a work of God, not a human plan. The verse says that Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they started living together as husband and wife, she was found to be pregnant. This situation could only be understood through God’s power.
In Jewish culture, engagement (betrothal) was a serious commitment, almost the same as marriage. Mary and Joseph were legally bound to each other, though they had not yet come together as husband and wife. During this time, Mary became pregnant, which could have brought shame, misunderstanding, and serious consequences. This shows the human difficulty surrounding the birth of Jesus.
Matthew clearly explains that Mary’s pregnancy was from the Holy Spirit. This means Jesus was not born through human effort but through God’s divine action. The Holy Spirit worked a miracle in Mary’s life, showing that Jesus’ birth was holy and unique. This teaches that Jesus is not just another human child but the Son of God.
This verse also protects the truth of the virgin birth. Jesus was born of a woman, making Him fully human, yet He had no human father, showing that He is fully divine. God chose this way to bring His Son into the world so that salvation would come from God alone, not from human strength or ability.
