Matthew 1:16 - and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.

Explanation  of Matthew 1:16

Matthew 1:16 says: The Bible presents Jesus Christ as both the Son of David and the Son of God. This twofold identity is essential to understanding who Jesus is. Through His family background, His miraculous works, and God’s own declaration, Scripture clearly proves that Jesus is the promised Messiah and the divine Savior.
1. Jesus Is in the Line of David
The Gospel of Matthew records the genealogy of Jesus through Joseph, who belonged to the royal line of King David through Solomon (Matthew 1:1–16). Although Joseph was not the biological father of Jesus, he was His legal father. According to Jewish law, legal sonship granted full rights to inheritance and kingship. Therefore, through Joseph, Jesus legally inherited the right to David’s throne, fulfilling God’s promise that the Messiah would come from David’s house.
2. Mary Also Is in the Line of David
The Gospel of Luke records another genealogy (Luke 3:23–38), which follows a different branch of David’s family through Nathan, the son of David. In Luke’s account, Joseph is called the “son of Heli.” This does not mean Joseph had two biological fathers. Rather, Joseph is called the son of Heli because he was Heli’s son-in-law. Heli was Mary’s father, and Luke is actually tracing Mary’s lineage, though Joseph’s name is used according to Jewish custom. This proves that Mary herself was a descendant of David, giving Jesus a blood relationship to David through His mother.
3. Jesus Is Proven to Be the Son of God
While Jesus is the Son of David by human lineage, He is also clearly revealed as the Son of God. His divine nature was shown through His works. Jesus healed the sick, forgave sins, cast out demons, raised the dead, and commanded nature. These works demonstrated God’s authority working through Him.
God the Father also publicly declared Jesus as His Son. At Jesus’ baptism, a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17). Later, at the Transfiguration, God again declared, “This is My beloved Son… hear Him” (Matthew 17:5). These declarations confirm that Jesus is not only David’s descendant but God’s own Son.

Core Message

Jesus fulfills every requirement of the Messiah perfectly. Through Joseph, He receives the legal right to David’s throne. Through Mary, who came from David’s line, He shares David’s bloodline. Through the Holy Spirit and the Father’s declaration, He is revealed as the Son of God. Thus, Jesus is both Son of David and Son of God, uniquely qualified to be the Savior of the world.
